Crip used to be under the name of “disabled (殘疾)” in the Chinese language. This exhibition sees a new possibility of reclaiming Crip in the context as ䷪ kyut3 (夬), the 43rd hexagram of I-Ching. Whereas 夬 bears a meaning of being damaged, ䷪ is the hexagram of breakthrough. 夬, a root of multiple Chinese characters – 決 玦 訣 抉 缺, generates diverse understandings and infinite potentials amongst imperfections.
“The body as home, but only if it is understood that bodies are never singular, but rather haunted, strengthened, underscored by countless other bodies.” --- Eli Clare, Exile and Pride: Disability, Queerness, and Liberation
The theme of Eaton HK’s annual Pride Month this year is "Eclipsed Bodies, Embraced Pride", a title that draws inspiration from the celestial phenomenon of eclipses. Our programming aims to illuminate the experiences of our LGBTQ+ and disability communities, whose narratives and contributions are often overshadowed and undermined by cis-heteronormative and ableist values and views.
“Eclipsed Bodies, Embraced Pride” seeks to foster connections between the LGBTQ+ and disability communities, inviting them to jointly address the challenges they face in their daily lives. We invite everyone to challenge the binary classification of bodies as perfect or imperfect, normal or abnormal, and to dismantle stereotypes associated with the labels “queer”, “trans”, “disabled”, “crip”, “mad” and with other marginalized identities. Through community innovation, artistic creation, and academic research, we strive to reimagine a more inclusive past, present, and future, where everyone can lead authentic and fulfilling lives.
